Volunteerism

Our Global Volunteer Program, which was formalized in 2019, helps match volunteers with community needs. Through the program, individuals volunteer for various causes related to our key strategic outcome areas. Giving back is a celebrated part of McDonald’s culture. All around the world, Company employees, Franchisees and their employees, and suppliers volunteer their time, skills and energy to support local communities through our Global Volunteer Program. We provide a volunteer framework and offer resources to help make it easy to give back. Full-time Company employees in the U.S. are eligible for up to three paid workdays (up to 22.5 hours) per year for approved volunteer activities during normal working hours with their manager’s approval. Global Volunteer Month, launched in 2022, is an opportunity for Company, Franchisee and supplier employees around the world to get involved in their communities and give back by volunteering their time to important causes. The initiative is a testament of the Company’s purpose to feed and foster communities.

Locally Driven Needs

The Company has programs designed to help deliver long-term community support through focused grants and volunteer support. The Company’s established community programs and scale help support the locally relevant needs of Franchisees and the individuals they serve around the world. In Chicago, where McDonald’s global headquarters is located, we take a multifaceted approach – combining philanthropic investments in local community organizations, Company employee volunteerism and leadership engagement.

Youth Opportunity

In 2018, the Company set a goal of reducing barriers to employment for 2 million young people by the end of 2025. The Youth Opportunity program, in collaboration with the International Youth Foundation (IYF), helps participants overcome barriers through preemployment job readiness training, employment opportunities and workplace development programs. We surpassed this goal ahead of our target year, with 2.2 million young people having participated in training programs and/or been hired in Company-owned and operated or participating Franchisee restaurants by the end of 2023.1 We recognize many populations face barriers to employment around the world, including but not limited to youth, refugees, senior citizens and people with disabilities. As we look to the future, we will assess potential new opportunities to build on the opportunity employment progress we have made so far. See our latest Purpose & Impact Report on the Goal Performance & Reporting page for recent examples of our global efforts.
